PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind – A 66-year-old Sacramento, California man was killed Monday on Interstate 70 while retrieving his roadside warning devices, following repairs made to his disabled truck, by a roadside repair company.
Indiana State Police say that 911 dispatchers received numerous calls about a minivan near the 56-mile marker that was driving recklessly and was all over the road.
Troopers say that 66-year-old Freddie L. Smith was picking up his roadside warning devices when the van drove off the roadway and across the white line striking him.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the van was 42-year-old Brian P. Rosano of Brazil.
He was taken to the Putnam County Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Rosano was tested and results show that was under the influence of a controlled substance.
He was arrested and is being held in the Putnam County Jail on charges of:
Possession of Paraphernalia, Class A Misdemeanor
Operating a Motor Vehicle under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, Class C Misdemeanor
Operating a Motor Vehicle While Endangerment of Others, Class A Misdemeanor
Possession of Syringe Needles, Level 6 Felony
Causing Death of Another Person When Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, Level 5 Felony
