TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Vigo County School Board has approved placing a referendum on the fall ballot asking voters for a property tax hike to help make up for a shortage of funds.

The vote was 7-0 vote to ask voters to approve the hike which would mean $53 more for a home with a value of $100,000.

The question to be on the ballot would read:

“For the eight (8) calendar years immediately following the holding of the referendum, shall Vigo County School Corporation impose a property tax rate that does not exceed sixteen and twenty-two hundredths cents ( $0.1622) on each one hundred dollars ($100) of assessed valuation and that is in addition to all other property taxes imposed by the school corporation for the purpose of funding safe transportation of students, to maintain safe and secure schools, reduce class sizes and attract and retain the very best teachers and staff for our children?”

The school administration is making $4 million in cuts over the next two years regardless.

Superintendent Rob Haworth told the Trib-Star that if the referendum does not pass then those cuts will increase to $8 million in the future.
