How Good Is Indiana’s Water Supply?

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana is trying to get a sense of how reliable the water supply is.

The new state budget includes 20-million dollars a year to gather data on the location and status of groundwater and surface water, and to hold regional meetings on how well-equipped cities are to make it safe to drink and deliver it to homes.

LaGrange Senator Susan Glick points out water affects everything, from farming to industry to swimming and sailing.

Jim McGoff with the Indiana Finance Authority says a state study four years ago found nearly all Indiana’s water utilities lack the money to invest in their infrastructure. Some water pipes haven’t been upgraded since the 1870s.

Glick and McGoff were among the panelists at a daylong water summit in Indianapolis, organized by the White River Alliance.
