Sullivan County Man Arrested After Firing Shots At Police

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind  – Around 1:45 p.m. Friday afternoon,  Sullivan County Sheriffs Deputies were called to a residence on County Road 75 South, to check on the welfare of the resident.

As officers stepped onto the front porch, three rifle shots were fired inside the home.

Deputies immediately took cover and called for back-up.

Sullivan City Police Chief Michael Garrett and Conservation Officer Matt Landis arrived, and as they were taking position near the northeast side of the home, additional shots were fired.

Sheriff Clark Cottom arrived and more shots were fired.

The suspect came outside of the house a short time later and surrendered to officers.

39 year old Robert M. Shonkwiler of rural Sullivan was arrested and was taken to jail after being check by medical personal.

Shonkwiler has been charged with Criminal Recklessness with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony, and Intimidation while armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 6 felony.

Police obtained a search warrant for the residence, and found multiple loaded weapons and numerous fresh spent rifle casings.

No injuries were reported.
