VIGO COUNTY, Ind – A former Vigo County employee who was accused of molesting a woman who worked for him has been ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution. Half will be in punitive damages and half in compensatory damages.
In 2014, David Gray who is now 63 years old, worked for the Vigo County Parks Department when he was accused of leading the female victim into a restroom at Prairie Creek Park, locking the door and sexually assaulting her.
The woman was helping clean up at county parks in November 2014 as part of court-ordered probation for a misdemeanor conviction.
As part of a plea deal a rape charge against Grey was dropped.
Gray was sentenced to three years on a charge of confinement and one year on a charge of misconduct.
He will receive credit for time served and the remainder of his sentence will be on formal probation.
He will also have to pay the victims attorney fees.
The woman sued both Vigo County and Gray in federal court, but the judge determined that the County would have no way of knowing that women around Gray were in danger.
