GAS CITY, Ind. — Hundreds showed up for a vigil in downtown Gas City Wednesday night to honor the life of Skylea Carmack.

Skylea, just 10-years-old, was found murdered late Tuesday night and her body had been stuffed in a trash bag and hidden in the shed behind her home. Her stepmother, Amanda Carmack, has been arrested and charged with murder, neglect, and battery.

State police said in a press conference Wednesday that it appears Slylea was strangled to death Saturday, but they won’t know definitively until the results of an autopsy come back from the Grant County coroner.

“I’m still overwhelmed,” said Tiffany Chomos who showed up for the vigil Wednesday. “I was hoping this would help this deep-rooted pain and I never even met Sky.”

Skylea’s grieving father and her birth mother were at the vigil taking condolences, hugs, and any support others in the community could offer.

“We were looking for a little girl, ten years old,” Peggy Sapp said, also a resident of Gas City at the vigil. “We thought we’d find her alive and then to find out the stepmother knew all along where she was at… it really made me angry today.”
