INDIANAPOLIS–About one thousand women will celebrate their right to vote in Indiana this weekend. The National Federation of Republican Women will meet in Indianapolis for the first time, and some of the speakers will talk about the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.
“We are honoring women’s suffrage. It’s our 100th anniversary. So, we think that’s a pretty big deal, said Jody Rushton, president of the NFRW. “It is such a legacy that we have as women, who earned the right to vote early in the 1900s.”
Rushton said the convention, which is held every two years, is a way for Republican women to educate and inspire one another, and this year, to talk about voting.
“We are celebrating that event and we are so pleased that we are able to do that with representatives of every state, from Alaska to Hawaii to Puerto Rico.”
Speakers include Indiana’s Rep. Susan Brooks, who has led an effort to recruit Republican women to run for office.
Other speakers include Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, and Kayleigh McEnany, national press secretary for Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign. Rushton said the federation has recorded 5.3 million volunteer hours for campaigns this year.
Rushton said that though this year’s convention is the first in Indiana, Republican women have a rich history in the state.
“It was 1938 when we actually were federated. Indiana had 145 clubs in the first year.”
