Fruit Is Good For You If You Eat It The Right Way

INDIANAPOLIS — Fruits are an essential part of a healthy diet.

However, some of us may not be eating them the right way.

Dewana Allen, a registered nurse and diabetes educator at Community Health, says there are three steps to making sure you’re choosing the right fruit.

“Most of the time you want to pick your fruit based off the firmness, the color, and the portion size,” she told WISH-TV.

For example, Allen says if you eat bananas, you should only eat half of one.

“Because it’s very starchy,” she said. “And there’s a lot of sugar.”

She adds that the more brown you see, and the squishier it is, then there is more concentrated sugar, which is something you want to avoid.

For those people that love grapes, Allen says to make sure you have a good variety of both the purple and green grapes.

She says you want to avoid grapes if they start to become shriveled up.

“I always tell kids to stay away from raisins, because of the concentrated sugar,” she said. “Anything where water is removed, it’s going to have more concentrated sugar.”

Allen also says to make sure you’re not overdoing it with fruit, and add in a good balance of vegetables as well.

“Anything is sweeter, we’re going to gravitate to it,” she said. “So we tend to not eat enough vegetables, and overindulge in fruits.”
