WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A New Jersey state police officer was arrested on his way to the funeral of Indiana State Trooper Peter Stephan.

The Journal & Courier says Michael Kulik planned to represent his New Jersey agency at the funeral, but never made it, because he was caught drunk driving.

Early Friday morning, West Lafayette police noticed a car driving slowly over the center line, forcing oncoming cars to swerve out of the way. Officers pulled over the car, and say Kulik appeared to be intoxicated. Test results show his blood-alcohol content was .19 — more than twice the legal limit.

Kulik was arrested and taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail. He was released just before 1 p.m. on Friday. Stephan’s funeral started at 11 a.m.
