VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – A teacher accused of having sex with a high school student faced a judge for the first time on Thursday morning.

35-year-old Gina Richey is a former teacher at Rosedale Elementary School.

She turned herself into police Wednesday.

Police say she had a sexual relationship for several months with a Riverton Parke High School student.

Court records indicate Richey bought the student gifts. Police say she was close friends with that student’s family.

Documents went on to say Richey even babysat the student at one point.

It is believed that she was never his teacher.

The male said he was a willing participant and was not forced or coerced into participating in sex acts. He told authorities he would go to Richey’s residence and mow the grass or perform other tasks and the  two would engage in sex.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department took over the case when it was learned that the alleged sexual incidents took place at her home in Terre Haute.

She is out of jail on a $25,000 bond. Her trial date is set for June 2, 2020.

A preschool aid in the district was also fired for knowing about the relationship and not reporting it.
