FISHERS, Ind.– A Fishers police K-9 was killed after a chase that started just after midnight.

Police were chasing two men they believed were driving drunk. They later came to believe that at least one of them was armed.

After the men bailed out of their car one was arrested almost immediately. The police search for the other man for about three hours.

Police Chief Ed Gebhart said a K-9 officer, Harlej (pronounced Harley), was killed, but he did not give any details.

Gebhart said officers heard a gunshot, or what they believe was one, in the woods where the dog was later found.

“It is my belief that he saved lives last night and we are thankful for his sacrifice,” he said.
