INDIANAPOLIS – Tons of turkey, chicken, eggs and duck will go to Indiana food banks in the annual donation from the state’s poultry industry.

Poultry producers actually make their donations throughout the year, but since 1948, they’ve celebrated the year’s donations at a pre-Thanksgiving ceremony at the statehouse. This year’s contributions total 900-thousand eggs, and 25 tons of meat.

Gleaners Food Bank president John Elliott says the egg donations are especially significant. Among people who struggle to put food on the table, a survey by the national food-bank group Feeding America finds just one out of 20 gets the recommended amount of eggs and dairy.
