CHICAGO, IL.–Indiana is one of the neighboring states being blamed for the increase in illegal guns on the streets of Chicago.

Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson says lax gun laws are letting high capacity assault rifles cross state lines.

“The neighboring states need to ask themselves, ‘If by making it easier to buy a gun in Wisconsin, Indiana, or Mississippi, are they contributing to the violent crime in Chicago? We should not be seeing military grade weapons, not just in Chicago, but anywhere. You look at these mass shootings all around the country and what are they using? That right there,” Johnson said Monday.

He says military grade weapons are making parts of Chicago a war zone.

“They don’t need to be on the streets of a city. They just don’t. You tell me you want something for safety. You walking around with that? That’s not to be safe. That’s to create havoc.” Johnson said.

The department seized over 10,000 illegal guns this year. That’s the most guns Chicago PD has gotten off the streets since 2012. The yearly average is usually around 7,000.
