VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind – Around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon Vermillion County Dispatch received a 911 call about a physical altercation between an adult and child in St. Bernice. Police also learned that the suspect had a handgun and had threatened another adult and the child. The suspect fled the residence on foot with the handgun.
The child was taken to a local hospital to be treated for what police termed obvious facial injuries.
While K9 Scout and other officers were tracking the suspect, Illiana EMS spotted the suspect and contacted officers.
Deputies arrested 31-year-old Marcus A. Vaughn of St. Bernice.
Officers say that he was found with methamphetamine and two razor knives. A loaded 357 Magnum handgun was found hidden in leaves next to where Vaughn was taken into custody.
South Vermillion Schools were placed on lock-down since the incident happened nearby and it was close to dismissal time when buses would have been traveling the roads in the area.
The lock-down was lifted a short time later when Vaughn was arrested.
Around 7:15 P.M deputies executed a search warrant on Vaughn’s residence.
During a search of the residence deputies located suspected methamphetamine, methamphetamine manufacturing supplies, homemade firearm suppressors, digital scales, and numerous other items associated with methamphetamine use. The house was also found to be in deplorable condition and deemed uninhabitable.
DCS removed the 7-year-old child from the residence and placed him with family members.
Vaughn was arrested for possession of a handgun without a license, domestic battery on a child, possession of methamphetamine and felony intimidation with a gun. He is held at the Vermillion Co Jail with $50,000 bond.
31-year-old Cassi Vaughn of St. Bernice was arrested for neglect of a dependent. Her bond is currently set at $10,000.
The case is still being investigated and more charges are expected to be filed.
