VIGO COUNTY, Ind – The Vigo County School Board will meet tonight and it will be a busy meeting as there are several things on the agenda.
The board meets at 6 p.m. in the administration building, 686 Wabash Avenue.
The board will hear a presentation on the tentative agreement between the Corporation and the Vigo County Teachers Association. Teachers ratified the agreement Tuesday. That agreement calls for, among other things, pay raises for teachers. The amount of pay hike will take into account when the teacher was first hired and that person’s education level. New teachers with a bachelor’s degree will start at $38.000 per year which is $3,000 more than they currently receive.
Heath insurance costs are going up, but that increase will be shared between the corporation and teachers.
If the board approves, the agreement will take effect January 1st.
County residents will have an opportunity to comment on the proposed $5.5 million spending reduction and revenue enhancement plan during a hearing near the end of the regular school board meeting.
The spending cuts as proposed by the administration call for many things including the closing and redistricting of three elementary schools, selling the administration building, changes to alternative education programs, keeping school buses in service a year longer than is currently done, and pay cuts for top administrators.
The board likely won’t vote on the plan until they attend retreats December 12th and 13th. Action could the come before the end of the year.
A task force will be formed to recommend a school consolidation and redistricting plan and will look at many factors when recommending the closing of the building.
