Trooper’s Vehicle Struck During Traffic Stop Near Batesville

BATESVILLE, Ind – Saturday (2/15/20) around 10:45 am, an Indiana State Trooper’s vehicle was struck by another vehicle while the trooper was conducting a traffic stop on I-74 near Batesville in Ripley County.

In a press release from the Indiana State Police, Master Trooper Daniel Elmore was said to be conducting a traffic stop on a semi-truck near the 152 mile marker on I-74 Eastbound.  Trp. Elmore’s Dodge Charger was parked behind the truck.

The Trooper was outside of his vehicle speaking to the truck driver when a Dodge minivan driven by 44 year old Juan Martinez, of Chicago, struck the rear of the state police car, shoving it into the back of the semi.

The minivan then went off the road and overturned.

The trooper, truck driver and the driver of the minivan were not hurt but three people in the van were taken to a local hospital in Batesville for treatment of minor injuries.

A six year old child in the minivan was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the crash although toxicology results are pending.

Police are continuing their investigation.
