Baby Surrendered At Terre Haute Fire Station

TERRE HAUTE, Ind – More details about a baby taken to a Terre Haute fire station.

Officials say that an unidentified person surrendered the female newborn at Fire Station 6.

The child was in a car seat with the umbilical cord still attached.

At last report the child was doing well.

Fire Chief Jeff Fisher said that this is the first time that he knows of that a child has been dropped off at a local fire station.

Fisher said that a fire station is a safe haven for someone surrender a child that they feel that they cannot care for or do not want.

He said that the city is working to bring a Safe Haven Baby Box to at least one fire station in Terre Haute. They can cost close to $10,000.

The box is a safe secure place to anonymously surrender a child and know that it will be taken care of.
