UPDATE: Trooper Adam was seriously injured but is expected to make a full recovery.
GARY, Ind – Wednesday morning just after midnight Indiana State Police were called to a single vehicle crash on I-80/94 west bound at the 7.3 mile-marker in northern Indiana. As Troopers were investigating that crash, a Chevy Suburban SUV approached at a high rate of speed and slammed into a State Police car.
The Trooper Corey Adam was trapped in his car and had to be extricated.
The driver of the Chevrolet was identified as 30-year-old Cameron D. Geweniger, from Wheaton, Illinois, refused medical treatment and refused a certified chemical test for intoxication. A court order for a blood test was obtained and authorities are awaiting the results.
Geweniger was arrested on preliminary charges of:
- Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Bodily Injury- Level 5 Felony
- Operating While Intoxicated Endangering- Class A Misdemeanor
- Operating While Intoxicated – Class C Misdemeanor
- Resisting Law Enforcement- Class A Misdemeanor
- Reckless Driving- Class B Misdemeanor
The roadway was closed for approximately 5 hours for crash investigation/reconstruction.
