PARKE COUNTY, Ind – We now know the identity of a child who died this past weekend after being rescued from Big Raccoon Creek in Parke County.

Indiana Conservation Officers were called around 1:30 Sunday about a swimmer who disappeared in the water near the Mansfield Covered Bridge.

Witnesses said the child was struggling in the water before going under.

8-year-old Athena Welch, of Brazil, was taken to St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil in critical condition, where she later died.

The cause of death has been listed as accidental drowning.
