Brazil Waste Water Rates To Increase In September

Brazil, In. – Brazil area residents will pay a dollar more per month for waste water treatment service starting in September. The rate will be raised from $5 to $6 for residents. That measure was passed after a public hearing during Wednesday’s  Brazil City Council meeting. The measure passed on first reading at the June 28th meeting of the council.

Commercial rates are going up also, based on how much waste water the business discharges into the city waste water system.

The decision was made due to United States Environmental Protection Agency rules. The $1 per month increase and the commercial increase is based on city population, said attorney Traci Orman.

“We tried to keep this rate at a very minimal amount,” said Mayor Brian Wyndham during the meeting.

In other business:

*The mayor plans to go before the Redevelopment Commission with plans to finance repaving of the city-owned parking lots because all the lots fall under a tax increment financing (TIF) district. Tax money in a TIF district is captured and used for infrastructure improvements.

*Councilman Shane Litz thanked the Brazil Rotary Club for hosting this year’s Fourth of July Celebration and he noted that a broken light pole in downtown Brazil on National Avenue is being repaired.

The next meeting of the Brazil City Council is set for August 10 at 5 p.m. in City Hall.
