INDIANAPOLIS — A bookkeeper for the Anderson Community School Corporation has been charged with wire fraud, the Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

62-year-old Carla Burke worked as the bookkeeper for the school corporation’s Food Service Department.

Investigators believe she used her position to embezzle for more than 5 years. During that time, she stole almost one million dollars.

Burke was able to write hundreds of checks to herself, and then make those checks look like legitimate payments to a vendor. She used the money for things like gambling at various casinos.

She did not report her higher earnings on her taxes. The Department of Justice says she also lied to federal agents when her actions were called into question.

Burke could be in prison for 20 years if convicted. She will appear in federal court in Indianapolis in the next few weeks.
