Washington-About 1:45  p.m. Friday American fighter jets were scrambled to observe an unidentified flying object at 40,000 feet over Alaska. According to a Pentagon spokesman, visual verification was obtained, and the decision was made to shoot the object down. The object was said to be about the size of a small automobile.

The Pentagon spokesman said it is not known at this time what the object is or where it came from. The object was shot down over the frozen ocean and attempts are under way to retrieve debris

The spokesman would not rule out the possibility it was another balloon similar to the Chinese object that was shot down over the Atlantic ocean earlier. He did say the object was shot down to avoid danger to other aircraft.

More information will be released as it becomes available, the Pentagon spokesman told journalists and a national television audience.
