BRAZIL – A house fire on Hadley Street, south of Pinckley Avenue, on Brazil’s east side has apparently left a family homeless.

Eva Hunt

A daughter of the occupants of the house, Eva Hunt, said the fire began above her mother’s bedroom. Her mother is on oxygen, but the family, including two adults and a girl, managed to escape the burning building.

A friend of the family said she believes the fire started about 30 minutes before we spoke to her, which would mean the fire began about 8 p.m., Wednesday.

None of the family were injured said Eva Hunt.

Several fire units and STAR Ambulance were on the scene including Van Buren and Posey township fire departments.

A friend of the family to whom we spoke said a breaker box in the house blew before the fire began.

“They lost everything,” the friend said.

Eva Hunt said the house had three bedrooms. Eva lives on the corner, near her parents.

“My mother, my father and my niece lived there,” she said. “We thought we smelled something burning, went to check it out. The kitchen started getting really smoky. I pushed my mom and my dad and the kid out the door. My mom’s on oxygen and I just wanted to get the flames put out because the fire started right above her bedroom where all the oxygen is.”

Eva said the only part of the house that seems to remain sturdy is the new metal roof, which she thought hindered fire suppression.
