BRAZIL – A $2 million sewer project was given a boost Wednesday when the Brazil Board of Public Works and Safety approved an agreement for engineering work including design, real estate acquisition and other work by Strain Associates.

The project includes installing larger pumps in the sewage lift station at the Best Western motel south of I-70 at State Road 59 and replacing a gravity flow drain that runs underneath the Interstate and serves as a conduit to pump sewage from south of I-70 to the Brazil Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The pipe beneath the Interstate not only gets plugged up but it allows stormwater into the old clay pipe, reducing the efficiency of the wastewater sewer drain, said Tony Eccles of Strain Associates.

In response to a question from residents in attendance, Mayor Brian Wyndham assured the current wastewater treatment plant will be able to handle the current and future businesses it serves in the I-70/SR59 area.

In other business, the board held the first of two public hearings on a revised five-year plan for Brazil parks.

The plan can be read and commented on at the city website, in Janet McClellan’s office in City Hall and at the Forest Park Golf Course.

”It’s important to have that five-year plan when you apply for grants,” the Mayor said.

It s also required by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The next meeting of the Board of Works will be Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. in City Hall.
