Terre Haute, In. – The current Vigo County Jail was built to remedy overcrowding at the old Jail.  Now the new jail is overcrowded. The new jail was built to house 330 to 360 prisoners. Currently nearly 60 have to be housed in jails outside the county.  The Sheriff’s Office and County Commissioners are working to solve the overcrowding issue.  Currently County Corrections has 130 beds which could be expanded to 230.  The ultimate goal is to help keep people out of jail and get them back out into the community as productive citizens.
