Olney Illinois Residents Count White Squirrel Population

Olney, Il. – Over 125 volunteers in Olney Illinois have been busy counting the white squirrel population in the town.  Olney is known for its population of albino squirrels.  This year the count came in at 81 albinos and 1,007 gray squirrels. They also counted 130 cats which is up from 85 last year.  This is concerning since cats are natural predators of the squirrels.  Experts say that if efforts are not made to preserve the population the white squirrels could disappear in Olney by 2034. Town residents are urged to feed and water the squirrels and drives should watch for them on the streets.  Many areas of town are marked with squirrel crossing signs.
