West Terre Haute, In. – Shortly after 4am Thursday fire crews from the Sugar Creek Fire Department responded to a fire on the north side of National Avenue in West Terre Haute which is basically across the street from the fire house. When they arrived, they found that some trash next to an old empty Laundromat building was burning and had spread to the building. The fire crews were unable to keep the fire from spreading to the adjacent Big Red Liquor Store on the corner of 4th and National. Sugar Creek Fire was assisted by several departments from the area including a ladder truck from the Terre Haute Fire Dept. The bitter cold weather hampered the firemen as they worked. National Avenue was closed in both directions due to the fire apparatus, hoses and ice. The West Terre Haute Street Department spread salt on the road and National Avenue was opened to traffic after about 4 hours. The empty Laundromat building was a total loss, and the Liquor store suffered major damage to the building and contents. Rumors spread that homeless people had been seen in and around the abandoned laundromat but a full investigation as to the cause of the fire is ongoing.
