GREENCASTLE, Ind. – A Greencastle woman was arrested Friday after state police investigated claims of child abuse and neglect.

Christine Smith, 62, is accused of beating and neglecting a child under the age of 14 in Putnam County, say Indiana State Police.

Detectives started looking into Smith’s behavior Wednesday at the request of the Putnam County Department of Child Services.

According to court documents, a four-year-old child in Smith’s care had bruises on their face, waist and legs. Smith claimed the child fell out of bed.

A preliminary exam revealed the child was “malnourished and significantly dehydrated,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

After reviewing the investigation, Putnam County prosecutors issued a warrant for Smith’s arrest. She was taken into custody Friday morning.

Smith faces several charges including domestic batter on a person younger than 14. She’s in the Putnam County Jail without bond.
