WASHINGTON — The Washington Community Schools superintendent submitted this letter that was posted by Washington Police Department
Washington Community Schools Families,
This is Superintendent Kevin Frank with an important message.
Yesterday evening, school officials were alerted to a warning of a school safety threat circulating around Snapchat and other social media channels. Immediate action was taken by the school administration and the screenshot was turned over to the Washington Police Department for investigation. All building administrators were notified, and the district requested a visible police force at all our school buildings.
Police detectives have reason to believe that the original post may have started across the country and simply made its way here via social media. There are immediate aspects to the picture that make it not credible. These include the timestamp of the picture in relation to when the school received it. Also, there is no mention specifically of Washington High School, any WCS School, or Washington, Indiana. In fact, the screenshot is so vague that no school or location is identified.
The Washington Police Department did provide an increased presence today, and in an abundance of caution, will continue to have an increased presence at all our schools tomorrow. We appreciate their quick action and support during this time.
We recognize the concern and fear that this type of threat creates in our school community. Thank you to the individuals who reported the threat. The safety of our students and employees is our top priority. I appreciate your continued support of a safe school environment, and we look forward to welcoming our students and employees at school Friday morning.
Thank you,
Kevin Frank
Superintendent
