Brazil, In. – In January Brazil Fire Chief John ‘Jake’ Bennett was arrested after a traffic accident involving a parked vehicle.  Bennett left the scene without notifying the owner of the parked car and according to police when Bennett was arrested, he had poor balance and smelled like alcohol. His blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.143.  Friday Bennett entered a plea agreement where he plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, as well as an amended charge of reckless driving. The other two original charges were dismissed. Under the plea agreement, Bennett received a sentence of 180 days in jail, which was suspended to six months of informal probation. He will also provide proof of insurance restitution and serve 40 hours of community service. He has already gone through alcohol treatment and will continue with grief counseling. The special prosecutor in the case the Bennett family had lost their son before the accident and that likely was a “contributing factor in both the mindset and circumstances that led to this incident.”
