WASHINGTON, D.C.–If you’re a farmer, your DC lawmakers know it’s been rough and you are being heard, said Sen. Todd Young, Tuesday. He’s pushing the United States Dept. of Agriculture to give farmers guidance on how to apply for money to help make up for crop losses.

“I just am really hopeful USDA will be issuing guidance soon so our farmers know how to apply for the crop and livestock loss monies that are available to them,” said Young.

He acknowledged the adverse weather conditions, namely flooding, that have kept Hoosier farmers from getting all of their crop in the ground.

As of this week about two thirds of the state’s corn crop had been planted, and under half of the state’s soybean crop had been planted.

“The June 5 deadline by which one can plan and still be eligible for full crop insurance has passed. So, now our farmers are faced with a deduction on all that they’re eligible for,” said Young. “Our farmers face some really confusing options.”

He said the USDA should act on implementation of the “disaster bill”.
