EDGAR COUNTY, Ill. – In Tuesday’s Illinois primary, Edgar County voters approved a one percent sales tax increase to either help pay for renovations to the currently jail or build a new one.

The current jail has been closed since December last year.

So far, work has been done to fix plumbing and electrical issues.

If new inspections go well, county officials expect to open the current jail with 32 beds.

Currently prisoners are being housed in other county jails.

The sales tax will also help to pay for more deputies.
