INDIANA’S UNIMPRESSIVE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

STATEWIDE — Every state has it’s own story when it comes to their unemployment rate recovery. WalletHub has tracked each state’s recovery, and Indiana did not end up in the best spot.

“It [Indiana] is still behind the curve here,” says WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez, “I mean, it ranks, with number one being the best and 51, including [Washington] D.C. being the worst, it ranks 47th.”

This report compared each state’s current unemployment rate compared to last week and March of 2020. Indiana ranks 47th in both categories. That’s unusual, says Gonzalez.

“Typically those numbers don’t match up. Maybe we see that since the beginning of this, it ranks pretty low but it’s been catching up in recent weeks. That is not the case for Indiana,” Gonzalez explains.

Gonzalez speculates that many unemployed Hoosiers may still be holding out for more remote work options. That’s something that industry in other states have offered. Those states have better unemployment rate recoveries, according to WalletHub. Gonzalez believes that remote work options could be a vital tool for Indiana to turn it’s unemployment rate around.

Gonzalez explains, “[Indiana needs to] come into diversifying industry, making sure that there are more remote working opportunities for people. That’s what a large sector that left the labor force, or that maybe still holding on to unemployment, really wants right now.”
